Select A Very Beautiful Retractable Awnings For Your Backyard

August 27th, 2011

retractable awnings

Finally the architectural design of the house has carried over to the outdoor space design of the backyard areas. No longer does the living space stop at the exterior door but continues to the usable area in and around the house. Whether you are located in a warm or cooler climate the outdoor areas are designed to be compatible with the interior rooms and add to the overall living space of the home. Outdoor designs have combined the qualities of nature with the comfort, choices and integral detail of the indoor space designs. The outdoor environment has become more functional and organized by this confluence of interior design standards resulting in an indoor/outdoor unified concept. Outdoor space is defined, shaped and limited by environmental structures like landscape areas, fences, patios, gazebos, arbors, trellises and furnishings. The patio can be further defined as a room by adding a roof enclosure which allows the patio to be enjoyed even when the weather is not cooperating. This can be accomplished by adding an inexpensive beautiful retractable awning rather than the high cost of an addition to the house and all its maintenance. The patio location should allow easy access to and from the indoor kitchen areas so the flow of people between is natural and direct without walking through another room or space. This will be controlled by the inviting placement and size of the retractable awning compared to the house, backyard and patio spaces. Access to the kitchen and location of the exterior doors will help in determining the preferred placement of the patio and attachment of the retractable awning. The awning comes in several standard sizes and numerous patterns and colors. The water resistant canopy offers protection from the rain and UV rays to the users and furniture for many seasons. Most standard canopy opening and closing functions are done by a manual crank with a handle that fold away out of site. There are retractable awning operational options for larger or custom made awnings that include an electric open/close control with or without a remote and weather sensor awning opening when rain is detected. These options are costly but maybe offset by their ease of operation. Awning accessories include valances, complete side screening and or drop curtains for more insect and weather protection. Besides the beauty of the retractable awning there are many improvements such as; increased water resistance of the canopy, better blocking of the sun’s UV rays, automatic operation of the opening and closing either by remote or rain sensitive controls and stronger frames and supports to with stand greater wind forces all resulting in an extended patio season that benefits the owners. Besides the functionality of the retractable awning they also have improved the quality and options of color, patterns and size (both width and extended length) of the canopy material resulting in an attractive addition to your outdoor living. Contact a local patio rep to discuss your project and the availability of a beautiful retractable patio awning.

Tips for Preparing an RV Trip

August 25th, 2011

rv awning

Once you purchase an RV you are left with the prospect of getting the best use possible out of your new purchase. After planning where you want to go, mapping the best route and making campground reservations through Trailer Life’s Campground Directory, Woodalls or the Rand McNally Directory the next step is to organize your supplies. Nothing is worse than being 50 miles from nowhere and either not having or being unable to find the things that make your RV experience the best it can possible be.

First, prepare a list of items that you need for your trip. The following list will provide a good guide for basic necessities:

Kitchen items: Including pots and pans, dishes, a coffee maker, dishtowels, dish soap, bowls, silverware, cups, utensils, a can opener and plastic storage containers. Clothing: In addition to four days worth of everyday wear, consider rain gear, boots, walking shoes, swimsuits, hats and work gloves. Bedroom items: Sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, bath towels, washcloths, sheets and a mattress cover. Items to help you have fun items include: Fishing tackle, firewood, a lighter, lawn chairs, a camera, lantern, water bottles, insect repellant, bicycles, sunscreen and a tarp. Other miscellaneous options include: Trash bags, a campground directory, road maps, toilet paper, toilet chemicals, paper towels, aluminum foil, matches, plastic wrap, a BBQ grill and a lawn mat.

Although you need to be prepared, it is also important to travel light. The amount of cubic feet available for storage vary by your type, model, and style of RV coach, most have under-dinette, under-bed, overhead, and wardrobe storage. There is still limited space so plan on carrying only what you need and leave a little room for clothes and other stuff that you add along your trip. Don’t bring an excessive amount of clothing, as most campgrounds have laundry services available. When you leave for vacation and as when leaving a campground at each leg of your journey, dump your sewer and only fill your water tank enough to last for use between campgrounds. Water is very heavy and traveling light will help on fuel costs and make the pulling or driving of your vehicle much easier on the driver. Be conscious not to overload your Recreational Vehicle.

]]>

It is very important that you make sure your RV is safe for travel before you leave. The following checklist may help prevent potential problems:

Entrance door locked and deadbolted? Loose Items secured? Heavy items secured in low cabinets, light items in overhead cabinets. Check Liquid Propane, make sure tank valves are closed. Check water and sewer levels. Make sure roof vents are closed. Check lug nuts on wheels, have bearings been checked and greased lately? Check brakes Check Engine oil, washer fluid, coolant, generator oil. Power cord stored properly? TV antenna down. Make sure awning is tightly secured. Don’t forget your sewer hose. Water hose disconnected and cap back in place. Storage doors closed and locked? Have someone watch while you test tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals

Another important safety tip: if you aren’t sure about how to operate a feature of your RV, get assistance. Seek out help from your local Coachman or Forest River dealers (or another appropriate expert for your RV manufacturer.)

Finally, once you leave on your trip — be mindful of the extra size and weight you are carrying on the road. Think ahead, allow yourself more time and distance when approaching traffic and traffic lights. Slow down and be safe, you are on vacation and in no hurry. Pace yourself to the conditions at hand, speed up while approaching a hill, slow down while descending one. Consider the cost of fuel while driving. Instead of driving the extra miles to buy small items along the way, plan ahead and make one big trip before you go. If possible, buy your food and fuel at one spot and whenever you stop always check your tires and lug nuts. Do not start or stop rapidly and remember to always think ahead, you will have a much safer and enjoyable journey as a result.

Eight Tips For Getting Ready For Texas RV Season

August 16th, 2011

rv awning

If you enjoy roaming the road with your recreational vehicle (RV), you have lots of company. Millions enjoy that freedom, too. Here are some general tips that will help to steer you towards a stress-free season on the road:

. Open all roof vents and windows and then remove any pest control items you may have placed during winter storage. It is also a good idea to clean or replace air conditioner filters.

Look for deterioration of seals around doors, roof vents and windows and reseal as necessary.
Check awnings for damage, mildew and insects.
Examine the hitch system for wear, loose bolts and cracks.

Many manufacturers recommend changing the oil and filter prior to storage and again in the spring. During storage, oil can separate and cause condensation buildup that may harm the engine. While replacing spark plugs, be sure to set the gaps to the recommended manufacturer’s setting.

Check the battery.
Check the cooling and fuel systems.
Drain and flush the entire system of the nontoxic antifreeze you used before placing the RV into storage and replace with the proper coolant.
Check for cracks in hoses and fan belts and replace if necessary.
Replace fuel filter, and examine the fuel lines and fittings for cracks and leaks.
Change the transmission fluid and filter.
Flush the water system.

]]>

. Check for cracks, worn treads and correct tire pressure.

Make sure headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals are all functioning properly.

After checking all mechanical components, it’s always a good idea to inspect your safety equipment. This means installing new batteries in flashlights and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and restocking the first-aid kit.

After making these routine checks, don’t forget to review your Texas recreational insurance policy to make sure it meets your current needs. Progressive, for example, has been insuring RVers for more than 25 years and understands their needs and wants, so it has developed specialized coverages that offer true protection.

Are your limits in liability high enough?
Do you have uninsured motorist protection?
Do you have health insurance to cover any injury? If not, are your RV Insurance limits in medical payments or personal injury protection high enough? Do you even have these coverage?
Does your policy offer replacement cost or actual cash value? Make sure you have replacement cost.
Does you policy offer roadside assistance? If so, what is the max it will cover?
Does your RV policy cover vacation liability? If not, to what extend does your homeowners insurance cover your RV liabilility (most homeowners insurance policies will not extend coverage to RV liabilities)?

These are only a few suggestions, but there are more things to consider. It is best if you contact you independent insurance agent for a better explanation and real life examples.

Designing a New Landscape With Retractable Awnings

June 26th, 2011

retractable awnings

Evolving landscape designs make balconies, patios, and yards more usable, even more beautiful. Adequate sun protection helps both people and plants thrive, and versatile retractable awnings lend both stylish grace to outdoor architecture and heat and UV-controlling functionality.

Moving Outside

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) revealed in January that landscape artists are moving toward making outdoor areas true living spaces, beyond traditional grilling. Gentle outdoor areas create a festive yet peaceful atmosphere that’s perfect for daily living and entertaining.

A major part of landscape design is determining how an area is going to be used and finding ways to unite those elements seamlessly. Retractable awnings accomplish this by delineating areas, like providing shade over seating while leaving the cooking area open. They can also provide a consistent design theme which complements the structure of a home and unifies different areas. Most importantly, retractable awnings are shields from glare, UV rays, heat, glare and sunlight so that the outdoors feel more friendly.

Dean Hill, a landscape designer for Terratecture in Indianapolis and a member of ASLA, agrees that retractable awnings have an important place in landscape design because they combine the functionality of creating a comfortable outdoor room with a timeless, harmonious style that can be incorporated into almost any yard or home. Effective landscaping balances home architecture, natural environment, garden layout, and usability. “We try to look at everything cohesively and how it might fit together,” Hill explains. “It’s looking at every piece of the puzzle.”

The key to creating that outdoor haven, says Hill, has three parts:

1. Have a plan. “It’s a roadmap,” Hill explains, recommending getting a design from a landscape architect or gardener, which can circumvent common pitfalls. A plan identifies the kind and placement of plants and high-use areas, so you can determine where to place retractable awnings for the most effective sun protection.

2. Figure out what your needs are. Do you want a play area for children, a small space for intimate family use, or entertaining areas for a dozen people? How are your needs going to change? Knowing how the area will be used helps you identify what design elements (retractable awnings, flowers, decks, trees, play sets, water features) to incorporate.

3. Determine the level of maintenance. Grassy turf is resource-intensive, requiring constant watering, fertilizing, mowing, weeding, and care, as well as money. Flower and vegetable gardens, native plants, and “hardspace” (like decks and patios) are much easier to maintain than lawns. Retractable awnings are maintenance-free. Decide up-front how much time and money you can devote to keeping up your landscape, and you’ll be happier with the long-term results.

One of the most critical elements for all three – planning, needs, and maintenance – is adequate shade. Controlling sunlight is important for UV protection and for heat. “Incorporating shade elements (like a retractable awning or patio cover) is going to give you more usability,” Hill says.

For living spaces, there are a lot of instances where you can integrate shade elements. For instance, vertical drop screen retractable awnings can encircle a sitting area to block bugs, while patio retractable awnings provide shade for pets which have to stay outside all day or are left behind during family vacations. Traditional lateral-arm awnings can be attached to a pergola for additional shade in the middle of the yard; there are all kinds of retractable patio cover systems which can be used over patios or walkways to create comfortable sitting spaces.

Retractable awnings can even be a way of saving your gardens. According to George Gustafson, a master gardener with the Oklahoma State Extension Office, heat and dryness are two of the biggest threats to gardens, even for full sun plants. “What full sun means,” he explains, “is sunlight all day for areas north of Kansas City (latitude). That’s pretty much an industry standard. In the south and southwest, the afternoon sun gets way too hot, even for full sun plants. The heat will burn them up.” Retractable awnings protect sprouting plants from glaring sunlight, allowing full sun in the morning and filtered light in the afternoon. Retractable awnings for shade gardens even make them easier to maintain – slowing evaporation means that you water less and stunt the growth of sun-loving weeds.

Awning Solutions

As spring planting begins and entertainment moves outdoors, it’s time to take a fresh look at how you use your outdoor spaces. The indispensable asset for retractable awnings is their flexibility: they can be installed in many different areas, they can be closed or adjusted to control both shade and light, and they don’t need any maintenance. Retractable awnings can be used on patios, over balconies, over hot tubs or water features, and even over gardens.

When picking a retractable awning, look at how you plan to use your outdoor space, and find the retractable awning that harmonizes with those needs:

• Insect and pest protection with vertical drop screen awnings

• Accessories like timers or sensors for sun, motion, wind, and rain which automatically close retractable awnings to protect them from damage – even if you’re not there.

• Different retractable awning styles, from traditional lateral arm awnings to free-standing butterfly awnings, plus hundreds of different awning fabrics in vibrant colors, bold patterns, and harmonious neutrals.

• Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics endorsed by the American Skin Cancer Association for UV protection.

• Lower temperatures (between 8 and 15 degrees) and less indoor heat buildup (up to 77%) making both indoor and outdoor areas cooler, more comfortable, and more energy efficient.

“People spend so much time picking out furnishings, curtains, for the inside of their homes. The outdoor areas can be a direct reflection of their personality, too,” encourages Hill. “You really have the opportunity to make an impression on the outdoors. Don’t hesitate to put your fingerprint on it.”

Clean Your Awning For $1

June 25th, 2011

rv awning

Our new Jayco Greyhawk RV has an electric awning and while an awning can provide needed shade and a good place to sit while grilling burgers or just people watching, nobody wants to sit under an awning covered with mold, mildew and dead insects. Unfortunately my awning was becoming quite the eye sore with the aforementioned mold spots all over. It was so bad my wife was embarrassed to extend the awning on a recent trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Since this is our first RV with an awning, I asked several RV owners what they used to clean their awning and they each had a different answer involving purchasing some cleaning product that was relatively expensive. Some of them use rather strong chemicals as well.

Most often it is a good idea to follow the suggestions of other experienced RV owners, however my objective was to find a better and cheaper solution to the problem. Also, the budget is particularly tight right now in preparation for a future RV vacation. A trip to Dollar Tree and the purchase of a bottle of their regular car washing liquid called Street Appeal offered the possibility of a solution. If it didn’t work at least the lesson would only cost a dollar.

The bottle did indicate that it was also good for awnings. I moved the RV from where it is normally parked to the front of my house and rolled out the awning. Using an eight foot ladder, a soft bristled brush with a long handle, a high pressure nozzle on the end of a garden hose and the aforementioned dollar store car wash liquid, the awning cleaned up quite well.

First the high pressure nozzle was used to wash off any loose debris. Then, after not being able to find my collapsible can, I made do by pouring the liquid directly onto the brush. With a little elbow grease the mold and mildew spots were removed and the job was finished with a thorough rinsing. The dollar store car wash liquid worked so well it seemed appropriate to wash the RV as well.

Of course the awning was left extended until it had fully dried. Keeping your awning as dry as possible will help prevent mold and mildew. In the future I will try and extend the awning after it rains to let it dry. That and a regular cleaning should keep my awning in good shape for years to come. Keeping your awning dry and clean will allow it to be a real asset to your RV and even when it needs cleaning you don’t have to spend a lot of money.

Stop Your Bed Bug Trouble With A Memory Foam Mattress Zippered Mattress Cover

April 19th, 2011

You may be completely oblivious that your bedding material is housing bed bugs. These small parasites come out at the hours of darkness, feed on their human hosts, and then withdraw back into the bedding material, leaving behind an itchy person. There are very few things which will eradicate the matter, but hearing the facts regarding these bed bugs will enable you to manage them efficiently.

Bed bugs may be lurking in your bed

Bed bugs are small blood-sucking parasitic creatures that feed on the blood of humans and other animals. They reside in lots of places, but beds are one of their favorites. They’re nocturnal insects, coming out to feed on their hosts in the dark, which customarily permits them to go unobserved. They generally suck blood for around 5 minutes and then withdraw back into their hidden home, leaving their human hosts with irritations of the skin, tenderness, and the desire to scratch.

Mattress covers will help reduce the problem of bed bugs

Getting rid of bed bugs won’t be accomplished through the use of a memory foam topper cover, however they’ll stop them from escaping their mattress and coming into contact with the individual person. A zippered mattress cover is the best choice because the zipper will fully enclose the mattress or memory foam where the bed bugs are living. However, the zipper has to fit tightly and possess small enough teeth to thwart the bugs from escaping.

Impermeable membranes help control bedbugs

A mattress cover or memory foam cover additionally ought to have an inside polyurethane-based membrane. The membrane not only makes the cover escape-resistant for the bed bugs, but it conjointly acts like a barrier sandwiched between the person and also the memory foam which will reduce or eliminate allergic reaction or skin reactions to the foam. Bear in mind that some covers have a membrane on one side, the top, whereas others include it on all sides. Including it on every side can ensure fortification even if you turn the mattress occasionally. Your best alternative is to find a zippered mattress cover that features a membrane on every side.

Loosely woven fabrics don’t make superior covers. Bedbugs are terribly small and will simply stroll through openings in loosely woven material. This makes it vital to buy a zippered mattress cover made with tightly woven material so that total entrapment of the parasites will be accomplished.

Pillow protectors will also help

Quality pillow protectors should additionally be purchased because bed bugs will hole up in pillows just as easily as bedding material. If these methods don’t stop the problem it means these pests are living in different parts of your dwelling. In this instance you may have to resort to disinfecting your whole dwelling which should be done by a skilled pest management company.

A mattress cover provides many benefits

Even lacking a bed bug dilemma there are various reasons for purchasing a top quality zippered mattress cover. Memory foam has chemical compounds which will be the cause of sensitivity or skin irritation in various people and a good cover will prevent or reduce these problems. This makes a top quality cover excellent for allergy or bronchial asthma sufferers.

They’ll protect against dust mites, pet hair, stains, and spills and can additionally increase the lifespan of the mattress. Mattresses without covers are very easily torn and don’t last terribly long. This makes it a lot more price effective to buy a mattress cover instead of replacing the whole mattress more frequently.

The History of Mattresses

April 17th, 2011

A mattress is used to make the bed more comfortable. It can have a single layer or multiple layer. Mattresses can be used to sleep on the floor as well. They are usually made of foam but other materials like natural or synthetic fibres are also used. Mattresses come in different shapes and sizes. They may be hard or soft. The various varieties of mattresses are used for different purposes. Normally small children or infants use soft mattresses.

But how has the mattress become one of the most important components of any bed? We can go back a little in time and discover some extremely interesting facts. In pre-historic times there was no concept of mattresses. The sleepy fellows simply lied down and slept. The concept of mattress came during the Neolithic period. The basic purpose of any mattress is elevation. Perhaps when we lie on bed, this makes little difference to us, but lying on floor without something underneath was and is still bothersome. It is necessary to avoid dirt or insects or the coldness of the ground. Early mattresses were basically lumps of grass or hay or leaves or any other such natural elements. Probably animal skins were used too. Before the birth of Christ, different civilizations devised their own mattresses. For example, the Persians used goatskins filled with water and the Egyptians used heaped palm bows. The Romans used cloth bags full of hay, feather, reed, or wool.

The fifteenth century mattresses were made of straw, feathers or pea shucks. They were covered with silk or brocade. The sixteenth and seventeenth century mattresses were an improvement on the earlier ones. Usually straw was used to make the mattress. Mid eighteenth century mattresses have straw, natural fibres or horsehair. They had fine covers made of superior quality linen.

Heinrich Weshphal discovered mattresses with innerspring in 1871, but they started to be widely used only from 1930 onwards. 1950 saw the appearance of foam rubber mattress in the markets and they are still used by many. Innerspring mattresses are the most widely used mattresses in the world the innerspring. These have a foundation that can be called a box spring, the innerspring unit, also called the spring core, and the layers of upholstery. The innerspring provides support to the body and helps the body to be in proper alignment while sleeping. Mattresses are now available in high tech materials that form perfectly to your body and marketed by companies such as Tempurpedic.

The companies manufacturing mattresses keep an eye on all these details. Some of the well known brands like King Koil, Sealy, Serta, Stearns & Foster manufacture mattresses which are comfortable and of high quality.

Helpful Facts – Memory Foam Topper Cover

April 17th, 2011

Your visco elastic memory foam topper might be infested with common bed bugs without your knowledge. These little parasites pop out at nighttime, feed on their human hosts, after which they disappear into the bedding material, whether a visco elastic memory foam topper or other type, leaving behind a scratchy individual. There are actually very few things which will eradicate the matter, but learning the specifics regarding these bed bugs can help you control them successfully.

You might not realize it, but bed bugs are like little vampires that suck on the blood of human beings. They exist in a lot of places, but mattresses are among their favorites. They’re night creatures, coming out to feed on their hosts at nighttime, which generally allows them to go unobserved. They typically suck blood for approximately 5 minutes after which they disappear back into their visco elastic memory foam topper or other bedding material, leaving their hosts with irritations of the skin, inflammation, and the desire to scratch.

A memory foam mattress topper cover or a memory foam topper cover will not eradicate bed bugs, however they’ll impede them from getting out of their mattress and coming into contact with the individual person. A zippered mattress cover is the most effective choice since the zipper can fully enclose the mattress or memory foam where the bugs are living. But, the zipper needs to fit tightly and have small enough teeth so the bed bugs cannot escape.

Memory foam mattress topper covers additionally ought to include an inside polyurethane-based membrane. The membrane accomplishes a couple of things. It imprisons the bed bugs inside the cover and prevents them from breaking out, but it conjointly acts as a barrier sandwiched between the individual and the memory foam which can lessen or eliminate allergic reaction or skin sensitivities to the foam. Be aware that some covers include a membrane on a single side, the top, while others include it on all sides. Including it on each and every side will guarantee protection whether or not you flip the mattress occasionally. Your best option is to find a zippered mattress cover that includes a membrane on each and every side.

Loosely woven fabrics do not make first class covers. Bed bugs are very little and can easily walk through openings in loosely woven material. This makes it important to buy a zippered mattress cover created with tightly woven material so that absolute entrapment of the parasites can be accomplished.

Premium pillow protectors must additionally be purchased since bed bugs can take cover in pillows just as easily as beds. If these strategies do not prevent the problem it suggests that these parasites are living in different sections of your dwelling. In this case you’ll need to resort to disinfecting your whole dwelling which should be done by a professional insect control company.

Even with no bed bug problem there are a number of reasons for purchasing a high quality zippered mattress cover.
