Is cheap baby bedding safe for your baby?

Many new parents go to a lot of trouble to identify and address many relatively unusual concerns about what is appropriate – and what is not – for their new baby. One of these concerns relates to cheap baby bedding; is it safe? The supposition that that anything that is more expensive is probably better and safer does not really apply to many things, and baby girl bedding is one of them. Although you can find full sets of baby bedding that costs hundreds of dollars, realistically a lot of these very expensive sets are more dangerous than just buying the inexpensive basics.

In order to validate the price, many of the more expensive baby bedding sets come with not only a basic fitted sheet, but come with pillows, pillow cases, and matching comforters or quilts. While these expensive sets certainly look beautiful, consumer safety experts say that having all of these extra items, especially if they are very soft, actually increases the chances of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The experts say that generally speaking cribs for infants under twelve months old should only contain a fitted sheet and – depending on the climate – a light, breathable cotton blanket. Therefore, some of the more basic, cheap baby bedding is actually safer than the very expensive sets.

Cheap baby bedding is also usually made out of cotton as opposed to synthetic fibers and blends, whereas the more expensive ones tend to be made of other fabrics. Again, part of this is to justify the price and part of it is because some synthetic fleece bedding is incredibly soft, much more so than basic cotton. However, many of your baby’s skin conditions are likely to stem from moisture and wetness in the crib, therefore using breathable fabrics – like cotton – is actually better for your baby than some of the more expensive synthetics. All said, cheap baby bedding may be better for both your wallet and your baby’s health and comfort.
