Small house is always identical with the word “narrow”, but if you know the tricks, small house can feel spacious and comfortable. One trick that we will discuss this time is the use of void. What is it void? 

Void commonly found in homes with more than one floor, the empty space that connects the first floor and others. But that does not mean a house with a floor can not have a void, create a house with high ceilings, then leave one space as a place of empty space to the top, this is called void.

Void properties that openly and directly upward can give more spacious feeling, in the room. For houses that are relatively larger size, voids are usually decorated with hanging lamp that extends from top to bottom floor. Forsmall house instead this should be avoided . Because the placement of decorative elements that are large and impressed heavy, will make the room feel more crowded.

It would be better if at the top of the void created holes. Thus, hot air from inside the house will flow upward through the void, and then released. If the cycle air is so smooth, the air inside the house will feel even colder.

About ten years ago my wife and I purchased, a seven bedroom Victorian home which sleeps about fifteen people.  During the summer we rent out our residence weekly to cover the expenses on this behemoth. Our guests usually consist of large families with elderly family members. We relish in the fact that others can enjoy our home, so at the end of every summer we make improvements on our summer rental.  Our upgrades are focused on creating a more comfortable environment for our guests.  My wife and I are also very earth friendly so we only use green products. A few years ago we decided to modernize the kitchen with energy and water saving products. Needless to say, our guests were very thankful.

Last year we found out through feedback from our visitors that the bathroom situation was difficult on their elderly family members.  Our home’s first floor includes a kitchen, laundry room, living room and dining room areas. Unfortunately the restrooms were located on the second and third floor.  Obviously we needed to fix this problem by at least installing a toilet somewhere on the first floor. I was really not sure how to add a bathroom to the first floor. Therefore I brought over a few general contractors to receive estimates and ideas on the placement of the lavatory.  After careful consideration we decided that there was just enough unused space to partition off the laundry room and install a small vanity and wall mounted toilet. We installed the small vanity in to the wall opposite the toilet. We chose a wall mount toilet with the tank installed into wall. This alleviates the space a regular toilet tank would take up. To my surprise the installation of the fixtures took less than a week.  The following are a few tips I gathered through the process.

1. Before starting the process measure and mark out with the size of the fixtures. It will give you a good sense of how much space you will have in the bathroom for mobility.

2. Keep it simple as possible. We knew we needed a toilet and a sink and that’s basically all we installed.  When you are dealing with a limited amount space try to avoid unnecessary clutter like cabinets, shelves, or drawers.

3. Use a low flow faucet and a dual flush toilet not only are they green but they save a noticeable amount of money on the water bill.

4. Register the bathroom with the local ordinance board especially if the home is historic.

5. Use a large mirror to create the illusion that the small space is larger than it is.

6. Make sure the wall mounted toilet has studs to fasten the tank and toilet. If the wall mount toilet is adjustable make sure it is adjusted to 17-18 inches in height. It makes the toilet easier to get and up and down. Grand mom and Grand pop will thank you.

My wife and I plan to retire to this home.  Therefore I tend to go the extra mile when making upgrades.

The living room is probably the most used or second most used room in the house, vying for top billing with the kitchen. Some homes have formal living rooms, as well as a more casual room for daily use, some have more of a a “great room” concept. Either way, a living room usually has more floor space than other rooms in the house. This makes it a fun room to consider when it comes to decor. There are several elements discussed in this article that may or may not be present in your living room. You can adapt some of the ideas here for use in other rooms of the house as well: Mantel: A mantel is a great place to start the discussion of the French Country living room, since it is often chosen as a major focal point. Mantels in French Country decor can be very austere and imposing, or extremely ornate.

Material are usually wood, but one can find mantels made of stone such as limestone. Stone mantles usually have a “bleached” appearance, and look almost like an old world hearth. Many wood mantels have ornate carving. These heavily carved mantels benefit from simpler displays so that the focus can remain on the intricacies already present in the piece. Seating: Choosing the seating that will be incorporated in the living room is the most important choice for the rooms’ use and look. In a very formal living room, which will be used less often, or for more formal settings, French sofas and love-seats may be a consideration. These pieces are delicately formed around wooden and steel frames and then covered with fabric and edging materials such as cording.

They are usually raised on high legs, and the upholstery is patterned or floral. For a more typical living room, couches and seating need to be comfortable and long lasting, but beautiful at the same time. Leather couches and sofas are a great way to fulfill both of these desires. Leather can be purchased with a distressed patina, giving it the appearance of age. A rich dark leather is usually chosen and warmed with the addition of wooden supports and brass hardware. Many French country couches feature upholstery tacks. The same description apply to single chairs found in the living room. They should mimic the design of the couches. Usually the chairs found in the center of the seating area are oversized and roomy, sometimes accompanied by an ottoman.

Smaller accent chairs can be used against walls or windows, in a small reading nook, or with a desk. Coffee Tables: Coffee tables came from the tradition of moving with your guests to another area of you home after a meal in the dining room. In the French Country look, coffee tables can be used to display items while remaining functional, since these tables are usually quite large. The traditional coffee table is rectangular, and there are many choices of woods and finishes. A large square coffee table is an interesting alternative. In any case these coffee tables tend to be low lying.

They may have plain tops, be knotted and distressed, or even be hinged with brass eaves that drop down to adjust size. In a more formal living room, a coffee table can still be used. You may want to consider a glass table with wrought iron, bronze, or gilded frame for the more delicate appearance of formal living room furniture. There are many different areas inside the home. There’s the living room, kitchen, dining room, bedroom and bathroom. Each of these areas serves different purposes and it is for this reason that home lighting should vary from room to room.

The living room is a fantastic hub for entertaining and relaxing. You should give it a lighting that surrounds the whole room. You should place an overhead light in the middle of the room, a few recessed lights in the corner and some table lamps on the side. Lighting should be flexible so you can switch easily from bright to subtle for your entertaining and relaxing activities, respectively.

The kitchen will need bright illumination most of the time. This is to allow safe cooking and food preparations. Countertops should be very well lighted so chopping and slicing can be done without any accident. Kitchen stove tops should be given bright and direct illumination to avoid having burnt food.

The dining room is another area where flexible home lighting should take place. This area is often used for entertaining so a cozy set of lights can make for a relaxing and hearty dinner. At other times, it is used as a working space where kids do homework or where parents finish their reports.

The bedroom should be given different layers of light. A bright one in the middle of the room will allow you to pack things clearly for your luggage when you travel the next day or it will let you clean your room at night. Bedside lamps will give you focused lights so you can catch up on some readings. Soft lights from wall sconces will allow your body to adjust to sleeping time.

Lastly, the bathroom should be given bright luminance over its different areas like shower, sink and toilet. Recessed lights are often used on such specific areas. Wall sconces are a staple in the vanity mirror. A small chandelier or pendant light can add a little charm inside a bath with a tub. Lights in this room should be adjustable to a dim to create a soothing effect.

Overall, the architectural design of this house is classified as “ancient.” Created more than ten years ago, adopting the design style of Mediterranean architecture combined with natural materials, including wood and rocks.
